October 19th, 2007 nafees No comments

She is cute, down to earth and beautiful so, why is the debutante receiving all the hate mail? Well, it looks like it has got to do something with her being close to Ranbir Kapoor.

It’s no secret that Ranbir has a huge girl-fan following all across the globe and the admirers are not too happy when they always see Ranbir on Sonam’s side being protective.

Sonam and Ranbir are traveling in India to promote their ‘Saawariya’ and the situation at the events is also similar as all the fans flock to be pictured with Ranbir and poor Sonam is pushed to a corner.

Channel [V] aired the first ever looks of Saawariya debutant actors Sonam and Ranbir Kapoor on TV by featuring a song from their film Saawariya for the first time minutes ago.

Ranbir Kapoor is son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor is daughter of Anil and Sunita Kapoor.

The only teaser promo of the film released so far, impressive as it is, did not reveal the faces of Ranbir and Sonam, through dexterous use of lighting and camera angles.

Saawariya director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has gone to extraordinary lengths to shield his two young stars from exposure to the public or press since the launch of the film over two years ago.

Saawariya was made on a budget between 50 to 60 crore. It is Sony Pictures’ first foray into Indian film production and is slated for release on Nov 9.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali on controversies regarding lead pair Ranbir-Sonam

September 13th, 2007 nafees No comments

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is extremely excited about his soon to be released film Saawariya. However his anticipation has been marred by a few controversies regarding Bhansali’s lead pair Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Ranbir is the star son of actors Neetu and Rishi Kapoor while Sonam is also the daughter of actor Anil and Sunita Kapoor. However there has been talk that Sanjay has been an extremely extracting director both on-screen and off-screen with his protégées.

Director Sanjay has been accused of even interfering in the personal lives of his protégées. Supposedly Bhansali’s interference in Ranbir’s personal life was the reason why his relationship with debutant actress Deepika Padukone went kaput. The director was not happy when Ranbir and Deepika began seeing each other as Deepika is making her debut in Farah Khan’s film Om Shanti Om opposite Shahrukh khan and the film releases on the same day as Bhansali’s Saawariya. It has been claimed that Bhansali also wanted both Ranbir and Sonam to completely stay away from the media as he did not want them to be photographed before the release of his film to the extent that he had forbidden Ranbir from being photographed by the media at his own sister Riddhima’s wedding. Moreover he had also asked Ranbir to stay away from parties and other social events for a while. However though Bhansali has denied interfering in the personal lives of the new stars, about not asking them to socialize much he says “If a newcomer goes out and feels the adulation that can affect him and go to his head then it’s better for him to come on time to the sets and read his script instead. Discipline is true for any job. If I’ve asked someone to follow a code of conduct what’s wrong with that?”

Saawariya promo an absolute delight!

promo01.jpg

Saawariya is the first Hollywood co-production in India.and Sanjay Leela Bhansali is no ordinary director so the expectations from the film are high. When the film is released on Nov 9 audiences will expect to see something out of the ordinary and, going by the first promo, they will not be disappointed.

The captivating trailer invokes feelings of deep pervasive love. Subdued lighting and placid water are good symbolisms for tranquility that comes from such love and Sanjay has used them tastefully. The surreal sets leave you in a trance but the building crescendo and the vibrant beats of the background score remind you that the film is about young restless love.

Saawariya stars newcomers Ranbir Kapoor, son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, and Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil and Sunita Kapoor.

Bhansali, who has gone to extraordinary lengths to shield his two young stars from exposure to the public or press since the launch of the film over two years ago, hasn’t lowered his guard in the promo.

Ranbir and Sonam figure in almost all frames of the promo but due to the dexterous use of lighting and camera angles their faces are never exposed. We saw Bhansali use lighting brilliantly in his last film Black (2005) and Saawariya holds the same promise.

From dad, with love

Since daughter Sonam got a dream offer from Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his film ‘Saawariya’, father Anil Kapor’s has been really anxious about the success of her debut vehicle.

As a personal contribution, to ensure the success, he vowed to give up smoking till the film is released. Therefore, for the last one and a half years, since Sonam started shooting for the film, Kapoor has not smoked a single cigarette.

When called, Kapoor was surprised how we found out about this very private commitment. He says, “I am not really a regular smoker, but I love my cigarettes once in a while.

There were certain occasions when I’d love smoking, but yes, since Sonam started shooting for ‘Saawariya’, I vowed that I would not touch a cigarette till her film is released.

I do miss smoking a lot, but a promise is a promise. This is not a mannat, but just a belief that if I give up something, probably it will help my daughter.”

Kapoor is waiting anxiously for November 9 when ‘Saawariya’ will be released. “Soon after, I’ll definitely smoke a cigarette,” he says with a smile.

Saawariya, yeh dil maange more

September 7th, 2007 nafees No comments
Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Saawariya’s promos tease artistically with promise of young love.
The master storyteller, one with a penchant for grandeur and cinematic scale, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back with Saawariya, his next film after the very acclaimed Black in 2005. Saawariya, meaning beloved and also one of Lord Krishna’s many names, explores young love with none other than the two most talked about star kids in the biz – Ranbir Kapoor, son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, and Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil and Sunita Kapoor. The film is teasing the audiences with its grandiose trailers on television channels across the country that have everyone asking for more.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “In recent times, I have seen many film teasers but Saawariya’s is the most artistically done promo. Despite the fact that neither the hero nor the heroine have been shown to the audiences, yet so much has been revealed. The RK banner shown in the end was a very beautiful touch. Sanjay’s track record is impeccable and I don’t think there is anybody in the film industry or the world who is not dying to see the film.”

After having worked with some of the greatest talents in Indian cinema, read Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit… Bhansali cast two raw newcomers for this film purely because he was looking for something to excite him. “Ranbir and Sonam exude a lot of charisma that they are born with and have a new approach to everything. I was used to absolute great performances from the best in the film industry whom you don’t have to direct after a point. I needed something to excite me and keep me going. Saawariya is a simple, young love story and to extract performances out of these two beautiful children was a pleasure,” says Bhansali.
But how does he explain Ranbir and Sonam being a closely guarded secret for the odd two-and-a-half years it took to make the film? Bhansali defends his stand saying, “The children had to be very focussed to be able to achieve their goal. They were both very disciplined and not spoilt in the least, but I just wanted to make sure that they slept on time and came to work on time and did not get carried away by the adulation and stardom whilst they were filming. They had assisted me on Black and learnt so much about the process of filmmaking and I learnt so much whilst teaching them. We had a great time and I have become 10 years younger working with them and I think they loved the attention showered on them.”

The film is scheduled to hit screens on November 9 and trade analyst Komal Nahta can’t wait to see it. “I am dying to see Saawariya ! The promo has all the grandeur and beauty that is associated with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It’s opulent and it gives a feeling that the film will be something very unique. After a long time, one has seen a promo that makes you stare in disbelief at the scale and thought. I think Sanjay has made superstars out of stars and made them act like they have never acted before, like Aishwarya in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas . I have no doubt that Ranbir and Sonam too will shine under his master strokes,” he exclaims.
But Sanjay just feels lucky to have worked with his team, alongside Columbia Tristar and Sony, making it the first Hollywood co-production in India. Uday Singh, managing director, Sony Pictures, India, says of the collaboration , “We are absolutely delighted with the teaser that Sanjay has given us. It has us all spellbound. We have wanted to work with him for a very long time and Saawariya is the culmination of two dreams for us – one to work with Sanjay and the second, to put up the Columbia lady in front of an Indian film.”

Sonam worked hard for Saawariya

September 4th, 2007 nafees No comments
Sonam Kapoor, the newcomer who is all set to make her debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya , had to actually shed about 30 kilos before she started shooting for the film. Confirms director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, “It is absolutely true that she weighed 85 kilos, and has lost about 30 kilos for her role in the film.”

Bhansali had given her the script of Saawariya while she was assisting him on Black . The actor, it has been learnt, was completely taken aback when the director told her she would be the heroine of his film considering the fact that she was overweight and didn’t really fit into the heroine’s role.

After it was final that she would be the heroine of the film, she lost weight and groomed herself to be an actor.

Sonam Kapoor’s parents, actor Anil Kapoor and mother Sunita Kapoor are quite fit, but as her father told in one of his interviews to a glossy, Sonam had put on weight on weight while was away from home for two years for her studies.

Sonam has been influenced by German playwright Bertolt Brecht and probably something very similar in Bhansali. She cameback from Singapore and wanted to be his assistant.

Rani Mukerji, who is also their family friend was then working with Bhansali in Black , Sonam reportedly requested her to put in a word although her father Anil was not very open with the idea of her joining as an assistant director.
